Create folded components, frames, and welded structures while preserving manufacturing-oriented design intent.
Sheet metal and weldments both describe fabricated hardware, but they solve different problems. A folded enclosure is controlled by thickness, bends, and a flat manufacturing state. A welded frame is controlled by its layout, member sections, joints, and added plates or brackets.
Begin with the manufacturing route
Decide whether the component will be cut and folded, built from structural members, or made with a mixture of fabricated and machined parts. That choice should determine the modeling method. A solid that merely looks like bent sheet does not necessarily carry the bend information needed for fabrication.
Before modeling, record the material thickness, key interfaces, inside clearances, joining method, and the manufacturing rules that affect bends or member cuts. Use values confirmed for the actual process rather than copying a convenient default.
For a folded component
Establish the base region and thickness, then add the flanges and formed details that define the part. Keep hole and slot locations tied to functional edges or datums so they remain meaningful when the envelope changes. Check corners, bend relief, tool access, and nearby features as the shape develops.
Review the folded model and its flattened state. Look for overlapping regions, features crossing a bend unexpectedly, narrow material between cutouts, and dimensions that are only correct in one state. The flat result is a manufacturing check, not just another view of the finished part.
For a frame or welded structure
Create a clear layout for the main frame and place the required members on it. Resolve member orientation, corner treatment, and end conditions before adding brackets, plates, or machining details. If the frame size changes, the layout should move the structure without leaving disconnected joints behind.
Inspect where members meet, not only the outside envelope. Confirm that cuts are physically possible, plates have space for welding and tools, and added details do not hide an unresolved gap or collision.
Review before the design leaves CAD
Compare the model with the fabrication method and the information the next team needs. A visually complete model can still be unusable if bend assumptions, member specifications, cut lengths, or joint intent are unclear.
Confirm material and section definitions with the manufacturing owner.
Check the flattened sheet or cut structure after the latest model change.
Review access for forming, welding, fastening, inspection, and finishing.
